Above a certain size, holding a crypto position stops being a personal arrangement and acquires the requirements of any other asset class. The reference I return to is [a regulated crypto payment provider with fiat settlement](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-payment), because nothing has to be requested to compare against it.

## Custody

Self-custody remains possible and becomes harder to justify.

The questions are whether the arrangement can be staffed properly, whether it is documented well enough to survive the departure of whoever built it, and whether there is a tested path for someone else to reach the assets.

Above the point where a single custodian's insurance is small relative to the holding, splitting across arrangements matters more than the choice between them.

## Succession

The question that rarely gets a good answer: what happens to the position if the principal is unavailable.

Self-custody requires a documented and tested arrangement. A letter describing where keys are, never executed, is a plan rather than a capability.

A custodian with a proper institutional process handles this as standard, which for some holders is the deciding factor on its own.

## Valuation

A stated policy: which price source, at which time, applied consistently.

A recognised composite index or a named venue at a stated point. Selecting the most favourable each period is not defensible. Where the assets belong to someone else, the rules are stricter and [a platform used for real estate settlement](https://collectnexchange.cy/industries/real-estate) is built for them.

## The reporting chain

Where an administrator, auditor or adviser is involved, each has requirements about the others.

Establish those requirements before selecting a custodian, because they constrain the choice and discovering the constraint afterwards is an expensive reversal.

Ask any custodian which administrators and auditors it already works with. The overlap with your own providers is the fastest filter available.

## Execution

Above a certain size the position is large relative to venue depth, and selling it the way it was accumulated is expensive.

The test: sum resting liquidity within half a percent of mid and compare against your amount.

A desk quote for the whole amount becomes correct at a lower threshold than most expect, because displayed depth overstates what fills. Compare your own arrangement against [a regulated crypto exchange](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-exchange) at least once a year.

## The documentation that cannot be reconstructed

Acquisition records and venue statements from the full holding period.

Export them now. Venues cease operating, and their records go with them.
