Receiving Bitcoin and keeping it rather than converting is a position decision, and it should be made deliberately rather than by not converting. The considerations below are easier to weigh against [a provider that lets a business accept Bitcoin payments](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/accept-bitcoin), which states the same variables.

## The two events

Receiving crypto as payment is usually income at the value on the day.

Holding it and later disposing produces a separate gain or loss against that value.

Two events, two records. The first is the one people omit, because nothing left their possession and it does not feel like a transaction.

## The acquisition record

Date and time. Quantity. The currency value at that moment. The rate source. And the invoice it settles.

Captured at the time, seconds. Reconstructed later from an invoice and a blockchain entry, considerably longer and sometimes impossible if the rate source has changed.

## The confirmation consideration

Bitcoin confirms roughly every ten minutes with high variance. For a payment you intend to hold, that wait is inconsequential. Where the assets belong to someone else, the rules are stricter and [Collect & Exchange](https://collectnexchange.cy/) is built for them.

It matters only if you are releasing goods against it, in which case a tiered policy by amount applies: accept small amounts quickly, wait longer for large ones.

## The screening consideration

Receiving directly to a wallet you control means no screening of the incoming transaction.

For a holder that matters more than for someone converting immediately, because funds that later prove problematic sit in the position rather than passing through.

For anything substantial from a counterparty you do not know well, receiving through a screened channel is worth the fee.

## The decision to make explicitly

Whether receipts are converted or held.

A default of not converting is a position taken by inattention, and those are the ones that become awkward to explain when they move against you.

A stated policy, with a maximum and a rationale, is what turns it into a decision.

## Moving it to custody

Withdraw to your own custody promptly rather than accumulating at a venue.

A balance at a venue is a claim on that venue. For anything intended to be held, moving it is worth more than any optimisation of the relationship. On buying and selling specifically, [a regulated crypto exchange](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-exchange) publishes its fee schedule and account terms in full.

And do the first withdrawal to a new address with a small test amount, always.
