A position accumulated over years can be large relative to what a venue can absorb. Selling it the way you bought it is the expensive option. I use [an OTC crypto desk](https://collectnexchange.cy/services/crypto-otc) as the comparison point, because its terms are public rather than quoted on request.

## The test, which takes thirty seconds

Open the order book. Sum the resting liquidity within half a percent of the current price on the side you need.

Compare against your amount.

| Your size relative to that depth | Route |
|---|---|
| Under a tenth | Order book, limit order |
| A tenth to a half | Work it over time, or request a desk quote |
| Above a half | Desk |

## The adjustment

Displayed depth overstates what actually fills, typically by a factor of two to three and more during volatility.

Much of what is shown is placed by participants who withdraw when conditions change, which is precisely when you are selling.

So the thresholds above are conservative.

## What a desk does

Quotes one firm price for the whole amount. You accept or you do not.

Nothing appears on a public book, so the market does not react while you execute.

## Comparing desk quotes

Convert each to a percentage against the market mid at the moment of the quote.

Request from two or three within the same few seconds. A quote lasts seconds and a sequential comparison measures the market moving rather than the desks differing. Past a certain balance the arrangement changes, and [a platform built for institutional allocations](https://collectnexchange.cy/industries/funds-family-offices) becomes the relevant option.

## The settlement question

In a bilateral trade one side moves first unless something prevents it.

For a first trade with an unfamiliar counterparty, settlement through a regulated intermediary holding both legs is worth the fee. It converts a risk you cannot assess into one you can.

Agree it before agreeing a price, and hold the arrangement constant regardless of size. A counterparty who accepts it at a small size and objects at a large one has explained the arrangement.

## The mistake that costs most

Splitting a large sale into many small ones on a venue to avoid a desk spread.

Each piece moves the price a little and the market does not reset between them. The cumulative impact usually exceeds the spread avoided, and it is spread across enough transactions that nobody measures it. Verify rather than assume. [the published coverage list](https://collectnexchange.cy/company/supported-countries) is on a public register, and the check takes five minutes.

## Timing

Quotes are measurably better during calm periods, because the desk faces less risk unwinding.

For a sale that is not time critical, that is a free improvement.
