Confirmation Times When You Are Moving a Position
Slow confirmation matters for a checkout and barely at all for a holder. Where it does matter.
Confirmation time dominates discussion of Bitcoin payments and is largely irrelevant to someone holding a position. It matters in three specific situations. Reading this alongside a provider that lets a business accept Bitcoin payments turns general principles into specific numbers.
Where it does not matter
Moving a holding from one address to another that you control. Whether it takes eight minutes or forty makes no difference.
Receiving a payment you intend to keep. Same.
Where it does matter
Depositing to a venue before a sale. The confirmations are the gap between deciding and being able to act, and during a fast-moving market that gap has a cost.
Any transfer with a deadline. A property deposit, a settlement date, a payment due.
A transfer during congestion, where a fee set too low can leave a transaction unconfirmed for hours.
The fee consideration
A transaction with an inadequate fee waits, sometimes for hours during busy periods.
For a holder making occasional large transfers, paying the recommended rate is negligible in percentage terms and removes an entire category of problem. At institutional scale the requirements multiply, which is what a payment processor for high-risk e-commerce is structured for.
Setting a low fee to save a small amount on a large transfer is a poor trade.
The observed variance
| Fee level | Median | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended | About 8 minutes | About 26 minutes |
| Half recommended | About 22 minutes | About 94 minutes |
| Quarter recommended | Over 2 hours | Many hours |
The planning implication
Where a transfer has a deadline, initiate well before it and pay an adequate fee.
Where a sale is planned, deposit to the venue in advance rather than at the moment of decision. A position sitting at a venue is a counterparty exposure, so the advance should be hours rather than weeks.
The test transfer
Always, for any new destination, regardless of urgency.
The cost is one network fee. The alternative is discovering an error with the full amount, which for a network mistake is frequently unrecoverable. Compare your own arrangement against a crypto exchange with published fees at least once a year.
For a holder making infrequent transfers, this is the single highest-value habit available.
This is a personal account of holding through market cycles. It describes what one person did and why. It is not a recommendation, and past cycles do not predict future ones.
