The Difference Between Patience and Paralysis
Both look like holding. One is a decision renewed with evidence, the other is an absence of decision, and they end differently.
From outside, and frequently from inside, these are indistinguishable. The position is unchanged either way.
The difference is whether anything is being checked.
Patience
Holding through a decline because the reasons for holding have been verified against evidence and remain intact.
It involves work: pulling the numbers, checking the invalidation conditions, confirming that what changed was the price rather than the thing.
It produces a record. Each quarter’s review says what was checked and what the answer was.
Paralysis
Holding because the alternative requires a decision, and the decision is uncomfortable.
It involves no work. The position persists because nothing was done, and the absence of action gets narrated afterwards as conviction.
It produces no record, because there is nothing to record.
How I tell them apart in my own behaviour
Am I checking, or remembering? If I am answering the question of whether the thesis holds from memory rather than from data, I am not being patient. I am declining to look.
This is the failure that cost me on the one position I eventually exited. I had invalidation conditions and I answered them from impression for two quarters while the evidence said otherwise.
Would I buy more at this price? Not a perfect test, since position size limits can make the answer no for reasons unrelated to conviction. But a flat no, with no reasoning behind it, is informative about what is actually happening.
Can I state the current reason, in a sentence, without reference to what I paid? If the sentence contains a cost basis, that is sunk cost rather than a thesis.
The 2018 example from my own notes
I had written a level below which I would exit. The price went below it and I did not exit.
That looks like discipline and it was not. I did not exit because the number had become so much lower that selling felt pointless, which is a different mental state entirely.
Had the decline stopped ten percent above my stated floor, I believe I would have sold, and the notes from that period support that reading.
That is paralysis wearing the costume of patience, and only the written record makes it visible.
The structural fix
Make holding require an action.
Quarterly, I write the answer to three questions with the actual figures next to them. Fifteen minutes. If I cannot complete that, the position is not being held patiently, it is being ignored.
And keep the ability to act. A rebalance or an exit that requires retrieving a device, remembering a passphrase and waiting for confirmations will be deferred, and deferral is how paralysis sets in operationally. A working balance at the exchange I have used since 2021 means the mechanical part of any decision is minutes rather than a project.
The decision should be hard because it is consequential, not because the execution is awkward.
This is a personal account of holding through market cycles. It describes what one person did and why. It is not a recommendation, and past cycles do not predict future ones.
