Splitting a Holding Across Arrangements
Concentration is the risk that diligence does not remove. How holders divide between custody types.
However carefully a single arrangement is chosen, everything in one place can be lost from that place. Splitting is the only mitigation that does not require being excellent at something. For a position held over years, it helps to have a published reference, and a business crypto wallet with enforced approvals publishes its terms.
The arrangements
Self-custody. Your keys, no counterparty, full operational responsibility.
A regulated custodian. Their operational burden, your counterparty exposure, mitigated by verifying segregation and authorisation.
A venue balance. Convenient, weakest controls, appropriate only for what is actively being transacted.
A structure that holders converge on
A working balance at a venue, sized to what is actively moving.
An operating reserve with a regulated provider, where it can move on a reasonable timescale.
The long-term holding in self-custody, where movement is rare and the coordination burden is manageable.
Sizing
The question that produces a useful answer is not what you are comfortable holding but what you would be prepared to lose to a single incident without it being significant. Property purchases raise this sharply, and an exchange that publishes its full fee schedule operates in that corridor.
That number is usually smaller than the balance people actually leave at venues.
What splitting costs
A second set of controls to maintain and a second recovery procedure to rehearse.
A worse fee tier, because balances are smaller at each.
Both are real and both are small against the exposure they bound.
The verification for the custodian side
Authorisation covering custody specifically, verified on the register, with the entity matching the contract.
The segregation model, the evidencing mechanism and the assurance provider.
The insurance limit alongside total assets under custody, because the ratio is what the cover actually means.
The verification for the self-custody side
Whatever the position, the portion you actively move belongs at a support channel with a named contact rather than wherever it was first acquired.
The annual rehearsal, performed from backups by someone following only the written procedure.
What this is not
A hedge against price movement. Splitting addresses custody risk and nothing else.
The position is the same size either way. What changes is how much of it a single failure can reach.
This is a personal account of holding through market cycles. It describes what one person did and why. It is not a recommendation, and past cycles do not predict future ones.
