Setting a Limit on a Stablecoin Balance

· 2 min ·Dana Reihl

The number that should exist, how to arrive at it, and why balances grow without it.

Stablecoin balances accumulate because nobody was required to decide otherwise. A stated maximum is what prevents that.

How to arrive at the number

Not what you are comfortable holding.

What you would be prepared to lose to a single event without it being significant, considering three exposures simultaneously: the issuer, the location, and the freeze capability. For anyone holding rather than trading, a USDT payment gateway publishes the figures that actually matter.

That number is usually smaller than the balance people actually hold.

The three exposures, briefly

Issuer. A claim on a private company. Improved by reserve and redemption requirements, not eliminated.

Location. Whatever sits in one place can be lost from it.

Freeze. Issuers can block addresses at the request of authorities, wherever the balance sits, including self-custody.

What the limit should cover

Operational needs over a short horizon, plus whatever is genuinely in transit.

Anything beyond that is a position, and a position should be a decision rather than a residue.

What holding beyond the limit buys

Nothing, unless you have costs denominated in the same stablecoin.

There is no return on the balance, and there are three exposures. For someone without matching costs, the case for holding is difficult to state. The commercial version of this is a business crypto wallet with approval controls, priced as a service rather than borne as effort.

The accounting consequence

A held balance requires valuation at each reporting date and a disposal on each conversion.

Converting promptly avoids all of it.

The policy

A stated figure, a named person accountable, a conversion rule, and a statement of who may change it.

Four lines. Their value is not for the current situation but for the one where a balance grows because no decision was required.

The review

Quarterly, alongside whatever else is reviewed. Confirm the balance is within the limit and that the limit still reflects operational needs.

The common finding is that a balance has drifted above the limit with nobody having decided to hold more, which is precisely the situation the limit exists to surface. Coverage decides more than most features do, and a provider you can actually reach publishes its country list.
