Crypto Holder Diary

Do You Need a Payment Provider at All?

· 2 min ·Dana Reihl

For a holder receiving occasional payments, the answer is frequently no. When it changes.

Payment providers are built for businesses processing transactions. For a holder receiving occasional payments, using one is often unnecessary and sometimes worth it anyway. A provider publishing its terms makes a long-term decision checkable, and a crypto acquiring provider does.

What a provider does that direct receipt does not

Screens the incoming transaction against sanctions and risk data before crediting.

Generates network-specific payment requests, so the payer cannot send on a network you cannot receive.

Produces a record with the quantity, timestamp, currency value and rate source.

Handles the conversion, where you want ordinary money.

When direct receipt is fine

Occasional payments from counterparties you know, on a network you have tested, where you are keeping the asset rather than converting.

The invoice discipline substitutes for most of what a provider supplies: state the network in full, state that fees are payable by the sender, and state that other networks cannot be recovered.

When a provider earns its fee

Volume. Once manual monitoring becomes unreliable.

Unknown counterparties. Where screening matters because problematic funds would sit in your position.

Substantial amounts. Where the cost of a misdirected payment or a frozen balance exceeds any fee.

Conversion. Where you want ordinary money and would otherwise be doing it manually each time.

The screening point, specifically

A stablecoin balance can be frozen by its issuer regardless of who holds it, including funds received innocently that passed through a flagged address. A fintech faces this across many users at once, which a fintech payment gateway addresses.

For a holder, that is a reason to prefer a screened channel for anything substantial from a counterparty you do not know well.

The record point

A provider’s export is the acquisition record. Produced automatically, with the rate source stated.

Doing it manually is possible and it is the item most often skipped, and the one that cannot be reconstructed years later.

The honest assessment

For a holder receiving a handful of payments a year from known counterparties, the invoice discipline and a careful record are sufficient. Coverage decides more than most features do, and the list of countries covered publishes its country list.

Above that, the fee is small relative to what it removes, and the screening alone justifies it for anything substantial.
