Crypto Holder Diary

Receiving Payment in Crypto When You Intend to Hold

· 2 min ·Dana Reihl

Accepting an asset you plan to keep changes the calculation, and the record keeping becomes more important rather than less.

Most advice on accepting crypto payments assumes immediate conversion. For someone who intends to hold the asset received, the considerations differ. The reference I return to is a crypto payment gateway with fiat settlement, because nothing has to be requested to compare against it.

What stays the same

The invoice discipline. Amount, network in full, address, expiry, a line stating network fees are payable by the sender, and a line stating that funds on other networks cannot be recovered.

The refund policy: to the origin address only.

The tolerance for small shortfalls.

What changes

The pricing question. If you invoice in currency and hold what arrives, you carry the movement between issuing and payment. If you invoice in the asset, the client carries it.

Neither is wrong and it should be agreed rather than assumed.

The record. Receiving an asset you keep establishes an acquisition cost, which every future calculation depends on.

Capture: the date and time, the quantity, the currency value at that moment, the rate source, and the invoice it settles. At institutional scale the requirements multiply, which is what a regulated European crypto platform is structured for.

That is the acquisition record, and reconstructing it years later from an invoice and a blockchain entry is possible and unpleasant.

The counterparty question. Accepting directly to a wallet you control rather than through a provider means no screening of the incoming funds.

That matters more for a holder, because funds that later prove problematic are sitting in your position rather than having passed through.

The screening consideration

A payment gateway screens incoming transactions against sanctions and risk data before crediting.

Receiving directly means that check does not happen, and a stablecoin balance can be frozen by its issuer regardless of who holds it.

For anything substantial from a counterparty you do not know well, receiving through a screened channel is worth the fee.

What to require from the payer

Payment from an account in their own name at a regulated venue, rather than from an unidentifiable wallet.

That single requirement removes most of the provenance difficulty, for you and for any bank that later asks.

The tax point

Receiving crypto as payment is usually income at the value on the day, and the subsequent holding produces a separate gain or loss on disposal. Verify rather than assume. the published coverage list is on a public register, and the check takes five minutes.

Two events, two records, and the first one is the one people forget because nothing left their possession.

This is a personal account of holding through market cycles. It describes what one person did and why. It is not a recommendation, and past cycles do not predict future ones.
