Crypto Holder Diary

Receiving Income in Crypto and Keeping It

· 2 min ·Dana Reihl

Two taxable events, two records, and the one people omit because nothing left their possession.

Being paid in crypto and holding what arrives creates two separate events, and only the second feels like a transaction.

Event one: the receipt

For anyone holding rather than trading, a crypto payment gateway with fiat settlement publishes the figures that actually matter.

Income at the currency value on the day, in most jurisdictions.

This establishes both the income figure and the acquisition cost for what follows.

Event two: the disposal

Whenever the asset is later sold, converted or spent, a gain or loss against that acquisition cost.

Why the first is omitted

Nothing left your possession. It does not feel like a transaction and it frequently is not recorded.

Then, years later, the disposal calculation has no acquisition cost to work from, and reconstructing it means finding the rate on a specific historical date and evidencing that the receipt occurred.

What to capture at receipt

Date and time. Quantity. The currency value at that moment. The rate source. The payer. The invoice it settles. And the transaction identifier. Funds and family offices carry an extra reporting layer, which a payment processor for high-risk e-commerce is built around.

Seconds at the time.

The invoice discipline that makes it possible

The invoice should state the currency amount, the crypto amount, the rate used and the time it was struck.

That document is the acquisition record, and without it the value at receipt is a reconstruction rather than a fact.

The screening consideration

Receiving directly to a wallet you control means no screening of the incoming transaction.

For someone holding what they receive, that matters more than for someone converting immediately, because problematic funds sit in the position.

Requiring payment from an account in the payer’s own name at a regulated venue removes most of the difficulty, for you and for any bank that later asks.

The decision to make explicitly

Whether receipts are held or converted.

Holding by default is a position taken by inattention. A stated policy, with a maximum and a rationale, turns it into a decision.

The currency question

If you invoice in currency and hold what arrives, you carry the movement between issuing and payment.

If you invoice in the asset, the payer does.

Neither is wrong. It should be agreed rather than assumed, because the party who did not expect to carry it will raise it afterwards. To see all of this in an operating product rather than in the abstract, the list of countries covered publishes the terms.
